Heather Gathercole Born on 27th July 1988 in Arrowe Park Hospital. Youngest daughter of Graham (retired police officer and now Environmental enforcement officer) and Helen (CPS Lawyer). She has one older sister, Janet and has lived in Bebington all her life.
School life took her to Brackenwood County Infants and Junior Schools and then after passing her 11+ to Wirral Grammar School for Girls. Heather loved school and says she still misses it. Heather left school with 4 A levels and went straight to Liverpool University to do Orthoptics. However, she chose a new path for herself just after Easter of her first year. She is now coming to the end of her first year of an Occupational Therapy degree at Liverpool Uni. |
With having her Dad as a Scout Leader and then later District Commissioner for Birkenhead, Heather was always interested in joining the Scouting world. Heather always used to follow her Dad to competitions and Scouting events when she was younger. Instead her mum, as a Brownie Leader, sent ( well more like forced) Heather to Rainbows and Brownies. Heather never went to Guides because the Guide leader scared her and was soon to be her Chemistry teacher for many years at High school. When Heather was 11, her dad found a Scout Group which took girls and Heather spent many happy years at the 40th Birkenhead Scout Group, where she played the bugle and the drum in the Scout band. In 2001, Heather was one of the first group of people to experience Explorer Scouting in Birkenhead on a camp at Sandiway. She subsequently joined Explorers and through the Explorer and Network section has achieved her Chief Scout’s platinum and diamond awards, Young Leaders award and most recently her Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s and Queen’s Scout awards. Heather was at one stage the Chairperson for her Explorer group committee. In October, Heather received her Queen’s Scout award certificate off Peter Duncan at a presentation in the Tate Modern in London and is still waiting to be invited to the Palace for her D of E.
Through scouting Heather has tried her hand at many things including several Special Needs camps, the last one in France in 2005, which help to promote Scouting for all and also Special Needs Scouting in Birkenhead. She has helped backstage with many Birkenhead Gang Shows. Heather has also achieved her Explorer Belt twice. In 2004, Heather achieved her Explorer Belt in Poland with the Poland Network and in 2006, traveled with Merseyside Scouts to Canada. Heather says about the two experiences that although the achievement is the same, the experiences where totally different but both were amazing times.
On a Group level, she has been helping with the Cub section since she was 15 first with the 5th Birkenhead Cubs and secondly with the 25th Birkenhead Cubs, with which she now holds her warrant as ACSL.
Heather was also given a great honour at Birkenhead’s AGM in 2006, as the District Commissioner gave her a huge trophy as Young Leader of the Year.
Outside of Scouting, Heather’s hobbies include playing Lacrosse for Liverpool County Ladies and for Liverpool University Ladies and Mixed teams. She also likes Rugby and has a season ticket for Sale Sharks Rugby Union club.
Post script.
Heather has been a great edition to the County Team and has been working hard as Secretary for some time now. Her efforts were recognised by the Network when she was awarded the Order of the Panther at the 2007/08 County Scout Network Conference held at the National Network Gathering. Keep up the good work Heather
