Maria Mawtus born 17th October 1986. Youngest of three, and daughter of
Peter (Marketing Manager) and Susan (Carer). Maria has always lived in Ormskirk
however spent much of her time in Newcastle were all her family lived.
She attended St Bedes’ RC high school and achieved 5 A’s and 5 B’s at
GCSE.
Maria was heavily involved in dancing and intended on studying dance at A level
and go on to do a degree in professional dance, however her choices did a 180degree
turn after getting injured. This lead to 3 A levels at KGV College in Business,
Psychology and English, which was a dramatic change from her initial intentions.
Maria is now enjoying her second year of a degree in Business Management and is predicted a 1st or a
2.1. |
Having her mum as a beaver leader from a very young age she got dragged along for many years
and was enthusiastic about scouting even when she wasn’t allowed in.
She lasted two weeks of guiding before escaping back to the more active scouting world. She joined ventures
a few years early since her brother Geoff was heavily involved in the unit. Maria took on many roles
such as district and county venture representative, assistant beaver leader, and then accepted the role
as chairperson of her venture group, ‘the Moles’.
Maria was a very enthusiastic venture, participating in all of the activities such as being a staff
member on international camps and also organising an independent exchange to a venture group and
school in Australia for 7weeks. The Moles were recognised as one of the most active venture groups in
West-Lancashire and were the first group in the world to change to an explorer group with a ball and big
ceremony at the stroke of midnight when the changes were being brought in. The explorer group thrived
for many years however when Maria was 18 it got closed down due to lack of leaders.
Maria then joined Ormskirk Network but got bored so spent a year out of scouting completely.
Then after talking to Lee and Gary while working on a checkout during a scout bag pack, she was converted
to Merseyside Network. Within a few months Maria took on Rutters role as Chairperson and is now
working towards finishing off her Queens Scout from what she started as a venture. She is also now
working towards earning her warrant while being an assistant leader at the Paladins explorer group in
Skemersdale.
Post script.
Maria has taken on a difficult role, having only been in Merseyside Network for a relatively
short space of time. She keeps us all under control as the Network committee chairperson. I hope
that Maria will be able to enthuse all our Networkers and continue excelling in her role.
Thank you Maria for your dedication, effort and hard work, despite being the newest member of
the committee, and hopefully we can all take a lead from your enthusiasm for Network.
